Q: What is acidic/alkaline soil?
A: Much ado is made about soil pH (acidity/alkalinity). Our native soil is approximately 5.5 to 6.5 pH (acid), but soil pH can and will vary in different locations. As soil approaches pH 7.0 (neutral), optimal nutrition is available to most plants. As pH decreases (soil gets more acidic), fewer nutrients become available.

Lawns, roses, most vegetables, and many ornamental plants prefer near-neutral soil for this reason. Dolomite lime is normally used to "sweeten" our soils on a yearly basis for these plants. Many evergreens, such as conifers and rhododendrons, are adapted to our normal acidic soils. These plants dislike lime.

It ís often assumed that soil is terribly acid beneath fir or pine; in fact, it is not. We usually assume that pH is the problem because some plants do not do well beneath these trees. The reason why plants may not do well under trees is simple: less light, less water, and fewer nutrients are available.
