7 Easy Steps to a Pondless Water Feature
Would you like the sight and sound of water in your landscape, but you aren’t really a “fountain” person and you don’t want a pond? Then build a “pondless” water feature, where the water seems to disappear into the ground. This can be a waterfall, a group of
rock columns, or an overflowing urn. Here are seven simple steps
to complete one:
Determine what focal point you want to use (e.g., basalt column, waterfall, urn) and what its splash zone will be.
- Dig a sloping hole about 12-18” deep in the middle and about 2-3’ bigger than your splash zone. Allow an area equally deep off to the side of your focal point to give you easy access to your pump.
- Lay pond liner in your hole (measure through the hole with a tape measure to determine your liner size).
- Cover the hole with pondless water feature grates (available from Sky in 24”X24” or 18”X42” sizes) or install a pump vault.
- Install your pump, tubing, and focal point. Fill the liner with water and test run, fine-tuning as needed.
- Add decorative rocks on top of the grate or fill in around the pump vault.
- Landscape the surrounding area and enjoy!
