The Rush is on for Rudbeckias

Nothing heralds the changing of the seasons better than Rudbeckias. Their bright, golden yellow tones help turn our thoughts towards the cool, crisp days of autumn that lie ahead. Also known as cone flowers, gloriosa daisies or black-eyed Susans, these garden favorites are great for fresh bouquets, dried arrangements, and attracting both butterflies and birds.

Rudbeckias can be divided into two basic categories: perennials, and re-seeding annuals.

Among the perennial favorites are Rudbeckia fulgida Goldsturm, the classic pure golden perennial yellow daisy also known as Black-eyed Susan. Although late to emerge in the spring, it is reliably hardy when planted in a well drained, consistently moist area in full sun. Growing to a height of 24 - 30", it combines nicely with bronze foliage plants and grasses. You can't miss the Godzilla of coneflowers, Rudbeckia laciniata Herbstonne! It has soft yellow flowers with drooping petals, and reaches a height of over 6 feet, making it an excellent choice for the back of the garden.

The re-seeding annual varieties of Rudbeckia hirta come in an array of colors and bi-colors, single or double, in golden, red and brown tones. Although best treated as annuals, when given excellent drainage they may over winter. Long lasting cut flowers, drought tolerance, and a long bloom period make them a must have for containers or gardens.

So many varieties, so hard to choose! Most have been named as AAS or Fleuroselect winners, so you know they've got to be too good to resist! Try Goldilocks, Toto series or Sonora if you are looking for a plant with a more compact stature. Other varieties include Indian Summer, Cherokee Sunset, Irish Eyes, Maya, Prairie Sun, and Rustic Dwarf, which range from 8 - 10" dwarves to taller varieties that grow to three feet.
