Q:
What
do I need to put in a new vegetable garden?
A: If your existing
soil is normal to slightly poor, till in about 3 inches of
organic matter (Cedar Grove Compost, Fertile Mulch, Mushroom
Compost, homemade compost, etc.). If your soil is exceptionally
bad, bring a sample to one of our nursery people for recommendations.
Add lime (but not when planting potatoes) and a good vegetable
or all-purpose fertilizer. Per 100 square feet, you would
need:
- 1
yard of compost
- 5#
of lime (except when planting potatoes)
- 8
cups of Whitney Farms Vegetable Food

Q:
What are the best tomatoes for our area?
A: With our cool
summers, we need tomatoes that can ripen quickly with relatively
little heat. For most reliable production, choose varieties
that are adapted to the Northwest and/or that list 70 or fewer
days to maturity. Some good ones to try are: Early Cascade,
Early Girl, and Stupice (all generally 3-6 oz slicer types);
Siletz and Oregon Spring (early beefsteak types); La Roma
and Mamma Mia (Roma types); Sungold, Super Sweet 100, and
Sweet Million (cherry types).
