PONDS, PUMPS AND WATER PLANTS

Is your pond ready for colder temperatures? You should still be skimming off any leaves falling into the pond, and by now you should have removed all your tropical plants and either stored or composted them. Pay attention to skimmer boxes and clean them often.

Fish should have stopped feeding, or at least slowed way down. If they are still eating, make sure you are using a very low protein food. Stop feeding altogether when water temperatures drop below 50°F.

Make sure you have an air pump or some other de-icing going as freezing temperatures arrive. Never smash a hole in ice as it can hurt your fish. An airstone is a great way to keep an area clear of ice and keep your water well aerated, especially if you have to turn waterfalls off. Consider installing a water return line (a line that bypasses waterfalls but keeps water circulating through biofilters) if you are away from your pond for long periods during the winter.

Come into Sky or call for help with your specific needs. We’d love to help you solve any problems you may have.
